FDOT D5 - SR 50 Widening MOT

SR50 Value Engineering

Orange County, Florida

OM Engineering has performed value engineering on the maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans for the State Road 50 widening project to provide the contractor improved efficiency and significant savings in construction time. The scope of the project was to add additional travel lanes to the portion of the roadway in Orange County, Florida. Specific concern for the existing MOT plans was accommodating the phases for construction of utilities and scheduling of the construction of a highway bridge. In meetings with the contractor, OM Engineering proposed suggestions for improving the MOT plans, and completely new MOT phases were devised for a section of the roadway construction according to contractor requirements and Orange County specifications. Significant benefit to the contractor was achieved by allowing rapid completion of utilities construction while routing the traffic according to bridge construction phases. OM Engineering MOT plans allowed the bridge construction to be completed in three phases instead of the four that was proposed previously. New plans also provided generally larger construction areas; therefore, construction could be carried out with increased efficiency and safety. Each new phase of the MOT plans was developed in close coordination with the contractor and submitted per Orange County standards.
